Benefits of Double Glazing
30th January 2020Insulated Glass Units, also known as IGU’s or DGU’s (Double Glazed Units) are window units made of multiple glass panels with a spacer and gas between them.
If this doesn’t make much sense to you, the best way to imagine it is as a sandwich. Two pieces of glass with a delicious gas middle. Did that sound strange? I thought so too… moving on!
The Benefits of Insulated Glass Units
IGU’s are great and very efficient when it comes to the weather. They provide better performance for when it is required.
Have you ever sat inside your home or office and felt as though you might as well be sitting outside? This is because regular glass windows aren’t designed to adapt to the weather conditions.
The way to keep the heat/ cool air in is to use double glazing. Now, I wouldn’t go trying to convince your boss to replace all windows just yet. With this fancy glass, also comes the price tag.
But I want to stay warm in the winter…
Although IGU’s can be more expensive than the average piece of glass, they also provide much more value and therefore justify it. I can’t give you an exact price, as that would require me knowing the precise size of your windows and seeing as we are strangers, that could be alarming. However, I can explain the process behind the cost.
Increasing the thermal performance as we have discussed, is done by using a ‘Low E’ glass. Low E stands for Low Emissivity, which is essentially the capacity of a surface to radiate heat. Also known, to the average person, as the “keep me warm when it’s cold” method. This method increases the thermal performance by 30% but also heavily relies on the frame you chose to place the window in.
Ok, so you’re saying I need new windows AND new window frames?
The vast majority of window frames are made from aluminium but can also be made from uPVC and timber. Using a thermal break, you can further reduce the heat/ cool air transfer from outside to inside.
It may seem like a long process, but we promise it is worth it and definitely a great investment.
If you have ever sat at work freezing with the aircon blasting because your colleague has a window facing office during summer, this is why. Your workplace has not invested in IGU’s and clearly don’t care about you. Even though we are kidding, it is remarkable what a difference it can make.
Almost convinced? Let’s touch on a few more advantages.
- Energy Efficient.
- Sustainable and environmentally friendly.
- Reduces outdoor noise.
- Durable with low maintenance.
- Increases the value of your house.
- Less condensation on your windows.
In conclusion, IGU’s are great for many reasons and we hope they become something you consider when choosing windows. We also hope you don’t ever repeat the gas sandwich metaphor…. sorry about that.
